AIRSTREAM EXCELLA 500 LAND YACHT CARAVAN - 1978 A rare opportunity to own one of the most famous caravans ever to be produced; the Airstream Land Yacht. These amazing caravans gained unprecedented notoriety in 1969 when the crew of Apollo 11 were quarantined in a modified Airstream trailer (in motor home format) after returning from the moon. See picture below. Produced slightly later in 1978, this Excella 500 Land Yacht has the same unmistakable polished aluminium design and as such is a serious collectors item. These graceful caravans are exceptionally rare in the UK and as such have been used this side of the pond for promotional vehicles, summer houses, road side cafes, or as they were originally intended; the ultimate caravan. This particular example has been taken in part exchange and we know very little about its history or what it’s actually worth. However, with the little research we have undertaken, an example in good condition can make very good money indeed. Measuring 32 feet in length, the light weight construction allows towing with a surprisingly modest vehicle. We have been told by the previous owner that he has undertaken the following works at a cost of circa £4,500: new marine ply floor, new inverter, new leisure batteries and both the electrics and gas supply have been converted to meet UK requirements. The fitted interior is divided into a large lounge, kitchenette, toilet/shower room, private bedroom and has the ability to easily sleep 4. Fitted with air conditioning, heating, gas cooker and grill, shower, fridge, freezer, sink, sound system, TV ariel, 12 volt lighting, awning, blinds, external side lockers, mains hook up and much more. None of these items have been tested by ourselves and may require recommissioning prior to use. Offered at such a price makes this a very cheap Airstream indeed, even though it does need some work to get it back into fully serviceable condition but would appear to us to be usable as-is.
